Fundraising: Tips and helpful tools
Basically, fundraising is just what it appears to be - the raising of funds or money. For a non-profit, fund raising is often the only way to get the money to pay for the facilities and programs that the group wishes to organize. Fundraising can take many forms, from sales to direct asking for money to organizing events or lotteries for which people will pay. Here are some necessary things to consider when you are raising a fun:
o Ensure you are comfortable with group or activity you're doing the fundraising for. Practice a short speech in front of mirror where you explain why you are asking someone for a donation.
o The first few times out, approach good friends and family. Tell them you've become involved in a particular activity or cause. Let them know why you think it's important and then ask them to join you by making a donation. If you're able to explain to them why it's important to you, you'll find yourself becoming successful.
o Planning a fundraiser can be easier than you think. Find 3 or 4 individuals who are equally involved in your cause and ask them to serve as a planning committee. Then, divide up the tasks and in record time, you'll have your basic planning finished.
o Ask local businesses for help. Often a restaurant will sponsor a fundraiser, where the guests will purchase their food and drink and you will get a percentage of the receipts. Other businesses will be able to provide you with items for an auction or drawing.
o When you able to gather some money, always remember the first rule of fundraising, "thank before you bank". This means that you should be dropping off thank you notes at the post office while you're on the way to the bank to deposit the donation.
Most importantly, realize that many individuals are ready to help a cause they feel is important - whether it's an animal shelter, a medical fundraiser for a local resident or buying new equipment for a community playground. Smile. Ask politely and you'll find yourself successful.
